lesson 13

Today I was away, but I asked what we were doing in class so I could do it at home.
Mr ward asked us to research some desk tidies, so we would have some ideas of what we could make.
Here are some of the ideas I am thinking of...

Evaluation

FUNCTION:
definition: Does the aretefact do what it was designed to do, or does it peform effectively and efficiently?
My desk lamp was designed to help me with a number of things: Firstly, to help me see while I'm sitting at my desk do work or whatever. Secondly to stand up by itself so it won't fall down. And thirdly it was designed correctly so the light wouldn't shine in my eyes, just on the desk so I can see what I'm doing.

AESTHETICS:
definition: Very Subjective (is often subject to personal tastes and/ or fashions of the times.Relate the colour, shape, proportion, texture and other visuals aspects of the artefacts.

My desk lamp was designed how I wanted it, not how someone else wanted it. I didn't do something totally different or really "out there" I just did something simple and how I liked it.

ECONOMICS:
definition: The cost of materials, manufacturing, labour, advertising, transport, packaging, sales, administration.

  • Aluminium body $2.40, I used $2.40
  • heat shrink $12 per metre, I used 50c
  • LED strip $195 per 5 m, I used $2.80
  • Power cord $2.80, I used $2.80
  • poly propylene $0.20,  I used $0.20
So all together my desk lamp would of costed $8.70.
But if I were to sell my desk lamp I wouldn't sell it for $8.70, because to make this lamp it took me some time, which I need to get paid for. And also if I were to sell it, it would of costed more money because this desk lamp is not package or transported, so again it would cost more money.

DF Assignment questions

What is the actual difference between light of different colours?
The amount of energy it contains is determined by the frequency of the EM wave. That being the case, different colours of light have different amount of energy and different amount of frequencies.

Define the following lighting terms:
Ambient light- The soft light that fills the volume of a room with illumination. It creates an inviting glow in the room and softens shadows on people's faces
Direct light diffuser-
Luminosity- Luminosity is a measurement of brightness. The intrinsic brightness of a celestial object (as distinct from its apparent brightness diminished by distance).
Energy efficiency- Is the goal of efforts to reduce the amount of energy required to provide products and services. Reducing energy will reduce your energy costs and is also seen as a key solution to the problem of reducing emissions. According to the International Energy Agency, improved energy efficiency in buildings, industrial processes and transportation could reduce the world's energy needs in 2050 by one third, and help control global emissions of greenhouse gases.
Watts- One watt is the rate at which work is done when an object's speed is held constant at one meter per second against constant opposing force of one newton.

Comment on Global warming
Global warming is affecting many parts of the world.  Global warming makes the sea rise, and when the sea rises, the water covers many low land islands.  This is a big problem for many of the plants, animals, and people on islands.  The water covers the plants and causes some of them to die. When they die, the animals lose a source of food, along with their habitat.  Although animals have a better ability to adapt to what happens than plants do, they may die also.  When the plants and animals die, people lose two sources of food, plant food and animal food.  They may also lose their homes.  As a result, they would also have to leave the area or die.  This would be called a break in the food chain, or a chain reaction, one thing happening that leads to another and so on.
How can the modern home become more energy efficient with regard to lighting?
The modern home can become more energy efficient with regard to lighting by buying fluorescent lights instead of incandescent. They are more expensive when you buy one but when you get our energy bill the price will be more lower than normal. You could also maximize the use of sunlight in your home. It can help to keep your lighting-related energy costs down.

Research a modern-day lighting designer and comment on their contribution to the design world

Durham Marenghi
Durham Marenghi has created the lighting design for a wide variety of theatre, opera, dance, trade, heritage, concert, live event and television productions worldwide. Durham has designed the New Year’s Eve light show in London since 2004. Durham also designed the lighting for the Winter Olympics and Paralympics Opening and Closing Ceremonies in Turin 2006. In 2006 Durham Marenghi received an International Illumination Design Award of Excellence from the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America for the interior speciality lighting of the Space Centre, Bremen at that time the largest indoor theme park in Europe.
I think Durham Marenghi has contributed greatly to the designing world because some of his lighting designs are incredible and amazing. He has made so many special events (as said in the above paragraph) incredibly good and made them so much more interesting because of how he designed them.

Here are a couple of his lighing designs.
